Letters to the Editor
I am greatly pained to find that what the various television channels at our disposal are serving up in the name of entertainment is in bad taste in every sense. Sadly, even the viewers are savouring this unpalatable dish. The tortuous, never-ending sagas of the sly and scheming mothers-in-law or daughters-in-law have already done much harm to the normal thinking process of the viewers. Compounding the problem is the avalanche of reality shows flooding almost every channel. They are simply aimed at raising TRPs and earning huge revenues both through sponsorship and the voting brouhaha. Moreover, these reality shows give their celebrity contestants a chance to climb higher as well as serve as a platform for the promotion of an upcoming movie. At the end of the day, it is profit-making exercise for everyone, except the viewer! It would be good if some production house takes pains to take a good subject or even an adaptation of a novel and launch something worth watching. A positive and sensible step in this direction can help in redefining the meaning of entertainment. Rupali Gupta, Kanpur
