This Day That Age
Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, Union Defence Minister and leader of the Indian delegation to the United Nations, told a cheering audience in New Delhi on December 25 that the Kashmir question would be settled only when Pakistan’s forces “go out of our country and the whole of our territory is restored to us.” Mr. Menon was addressing a meeting organised under the auspices of the Indian Council of World Affairs. The Sapru House Auditorium, where Mr. Menon delivered his speech, was overcrowded, and a large part of the audience spilled into the conference room and the lawns outside the building. Special loudspeaker arrangements were made to enable those who could not see Mr. Menon, at least to hear him. Mr. Menon emphasised that for India, the Kashmir problem was a problem of the independence of the Indian Union.
