dated December 27, 1957: The gold sovereign

Thousands of new gold sovereigns – the old British coin replaced 40 years ago by the Bank-note – are to be minted, to beat counterfeiters abroad, it was announced in London on December 24. The gold piece – face value 20 shillings – was withdrawn from Britain’s coinage in 1917. It is to-day worth about 74 shillings. The new coins will go into Britain’s gold reserves, and older sovereigns — a few were minted in 1949 and 1951 — will be released.
