Shane Warne’s new role

Melbourne: Spin champion Shane Warne has turned champion of spin, joining Cricket Australia (CA) to promote the cause of young spin bowlers.

Warne will be involved in coaching Australia’s young spinners and working with their State captains to help them understand the use of spin bowling.

Terry Jenner, Warne’s coach, told The Hindu earlier this year about how several young spinners had fallen by the wayside because of “insensitive” captains. “Most of them don’t understand the art, so how can you expect them to encourage it?” Jenner had said.

Warne’s ‘Leadership in Cricket’ role will see him spend time at the CA Centre of Excellence and work with all the Australian men’s and women’s squads.

He will join the likes of former Australian captains Allan Border and Mark Taylor on CA’s committee which looks at developing the game on-field.

“The work I’m going to be doing with young spinners and their State captains is really important and I believe I’ve got a lot to offer,” said Warne. — Special Correspondent
