Haryana continues to dominate

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Haryana’s dominance in wrestling continued for the second successive day as its wrestlers won four out of the six gold medals at stake on the penultimate day of the National inter-school championships at the Central stadium here on Wednesday..

In weightlifting Tamil Nadu lifters hogged the limelight by winning two out of the three gold medals. There was some cheer for host Kerala when its girls’ football team entered the final with a 3-0 win over Maharasthra. Kerala will meet Orissa in the final. Orissa defeated Maharashtra 4-3 in tie-breaker after both teams were locked 1-1 at end of regular time.

Assam will meet Orissa in the boys’ football final. In the semifinals, Assam overcame Haryana by a solitary goal while Orissa defeated Mizoram 2-0.

Kerala girls also entered the final in volleyball with a straight-set win over Tamil Nadu. In the final it will take on Haryana which also scored a straight-set win over Maharashtra.

The results: Wrestling: Boys: 35kg: 1. Sandeep (Har), 2. K. Sudhantha (Ker), 3. Daskri Jamadar (Goa); 47kg: 1. Jaideep (Har), 2. Lainuzira (Miz), 3. Harish Chandran (Ker) & V.S. Maydum (Mah); 73kg: 1. Lalchhugliuna (Miz), 2. P.T. Kevin (Ker).

Girls: 32kg: 1. S.S. Bidgar (Mah), 2. Poonam (Har), 3. Leeshma (Ker); 47kg: Sanju Tukhar (Har), 2. Suryavanshi (Mah), 3. S. Savitha (Ker). 57kg: 1. Anila (Har), 2. Vanilalnun Thori (Miz).

Weightlifting: 62kg: 1. Sebastian Joseph (TN), 2. Manilal Yadav (Har), 3. Achutanda Salwe (Ori); 68kg: 1. Sateesh Kumar (TN), 2. Satya Sachi Pradhan (Ori), 3. Praveen D. Desai (Mah); 71kg: 1. Sunny Kumar (Har), 2. Masood Aazan (Ker), 3. S. Satheesh (TN).

Football: Boys (semifinal): Assam bt Haryana 1-0; Orissa bt Mizoram 2-0. Girls (semifinal): Kerala bt Maharashtra 3-0; Orissa bt Haryana 4-3.

Table Tennis: Boys (final): Tamil Nadu bt Maharashtra 3-0; Loser’s final: Kerala bt Goa 3-2. Girls (final): Maharashtra bt Tamil Nadu 3-1; Loser’s final: Kerala bt Andaman 3-0.
