Uttar Pradesh takes lead

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Uttar Pradesh took a vital first innings lead of 143 runs thanks to a dismal batting display by Hyderabad, which was bowled out for 193 in reply to the visitor’s 336, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy super league Group ‘B’ cricket match here on Wednesday.

Earlier, resuming at 293 for six, the Uttar Pradesh innings folded up at 336.

In reply, Hyderabad started badly. D.B. Ravi Teja, paid the penalty for driving away from his body and was bowled by Praveen Kumar in the fourth over of the innings.

Soon Anoop Pai was trapped leg before wicket by one from Tyagi that swung back sharply.

Doubtful decision

Captain N. Arjun Yadav made a breezy 22. But he was declared out caught at slip off left-arm spinner Praveen Gupta when there were doubts on whether the fielder took it on the half-volley.

In the same over, the left-armer trapped Amol Shinde to reduce Hyderabad to 69 for four in 26th over.

The situation required discipline, but Mohd. Shakir (49, 41b, 8x4, 2x6) batted as if he was in a hurry. He was completely bemused by a googly in the very first over he faced from Piyush Chawla which rearranged the stumps.

M.P. Arjun and Pragyan Ojha put on a 46-run stand for the eighth wicket which helped the home team avoid the follow-on.

Chawla and Praveen, who took four wickets each, saw Hyderabad bowled out 15 overs after lunch.

In its second essay, Uttar Pradesh was 28 for no loss at close for an overall lead of 171 runs.
