North Bengal teams grab major share of honours

V FOR VICTORY: The North Bengal sub-junior boys and cadet girls after winning the titles in their respective categories.

CHENNAI: North Bengal teams grabbed a major share of the honours on the final day of the inter-State phase of the ongoing Velammal National sub-junior table tennis championship at the Nehru indoor stadium here on Wednesday.

The cadet girls won the team title for the first time and then the sub-junior boys toppled holder PSPB A to regain the title. The sub-junior girls’ team title was annexed by Maharashtra ‘A’ while the cadet boys’ honours went to PSPB A. Anuska Dutta played a major role for North Bengal winning both her singles.

The sub-junior boys’ final seemed a fight between two unequals at least by the looks of the players. The North Bengal players were taller and sturdier as compared to their PSPB ‘A’ opponents. But the academy boys put up a brave fight, even if caught in errors repeatedly.

“They appeared to tire out, having played a row of matches from morning,” felt Yen Wei, the Chinese coach of PSB Academy. “I have seen Abhishek Yadav beat his opponent Arnab Adhikari before,” he said of the key match. But the fact remained that Abhishek proved to be the weak link.

Meanwhile the open events got underway on Wednesday. K. Jothikumaran, IHF Secretary, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

The results: sub-junior boys: final: North Bengal bt PSPB ‘A’ 3-1 (Arnab Adhikari lost to Vivek Bhargava 11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 10-12, 8-11; Avik Das bt Abhishek Yadav 11-5, 11-2, 11-5; Arnab Adhikari and Avik Das bt Vivek Bhargava and Abhishek Yadav 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8; Arnab Adhikari bt Abhishek Yadav 11-2, 11-5, 11-2).

Semifinals: PSPB ‘A’ bt Delhi 3-0; North Bengal bt Tamil Nadu 3-0.

Quarterfinals: PSPB ‘A’ bt West Bengal 3-0; North Bengal bt Maharashtra ‘A’ 3-1; TN bt Karnataka 3-2; Delhi bt AP 3-2.
