“Few Assembly sittings a ploy to avoid criticism”

Staff Reporter

Sheila is actually behaving like a dictator, says Opposition

NEW DELHI: Criticising the Delhi Government for not calling the prescribed minimum 60 sittings of the State Assembly in a year, Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi on Wednesday charged that the Government was deliberately doing this to avoid criticism on various important issues.

“Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has stated that there are no issues and that is why more sittings are not needed. But the fact of the matter is that we, the BJP members, had given notices on 47 issues of which only two – power and unauthorised colonies – have been allowed for discussion. She is actually behaving like a dictator,” he charged.

Stating that none of the Congress MLAs had given a notice for discussion, Prof. Mukhi said because of just three sittings in this session various important issues such as full Statehood for Delhi, transport, Blueline bus accidents, price rise, liberal liquor policy, water shortage and problems associated with ration cards would not be taken up for discussion.

“Also, if you look up the Assembly records, you will find that the House has often been adjourned due to lack of quorum and this reflects poorly on the treasury benches,” Prof. Mukhi said.

Accusing the Delhi Government of rushing with the Bills and not discussing them properly before passing them, he said: “The Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Bill, 2007, was passed in the last session but it has come back with an amendment in this session again for approval as last time it had not been discussed properly.”
