New Delhi
NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s plans of constructing a dog centre and crematorium have run aground even before taking off with the Delhi Development Authority turning down its request for allocation of land for the purpose. “We need a decentralised system to build a shelter where captured stray dogs can be kept, vaccinated and fed. The location of this shelter has to be away from the city to ensure that it doesn’t cause public nuisance. We can utilise our own slum land for construction or re-approach the DDA with another request for land,” said Municipal Commissioner Ashok Kumar Nigam at a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee on Wednesday. Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said since it was not possible to entirely eliminate stray dogs form the Capital, the sterilisation process should be speeded up to arrest their breeding. Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma said the civic body’s Veterinary Department had failed to check the burgeoning dog menace on Delhi’s streets. “I hope it doesn’t take a councillor’s death due to dog-bite to make the authorities realise the gravity of the situation,” he said. MCD Veterinary Services Director R. B. S. Tyagi said the number of dogs that could be sterilised per day depended on the infrastructure available with the non-government organisations deployed for the job. “Though the NGOs do not give us accurate area-wise figures of the dogs sterilised, we have a three-doctor team to inspect their premises and analyse the excised reproductive organs that are preserved in formalin,” he added Among other issues, J. K. Sharma raked up the ongoing tiff between the civic body and the Delhi Government.
