BJP to examine causes of defeat in M.P. by-elections

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, reeling under the shock of its defeat in the recent Sanwer Assembly and Khargone Lok Sabha by-elections, would now take up the exercise of opening a dialogue with party cadres to find out why the ruling party performed badly in successive by-elections in the State.

The defeated BJP candidate from Khargone, Krishnamurari Moghe, startled everyone attending the State party unit executive meeting here on Monday when he spoke out and said that he had been defeated not by the Congress candidate but by those within his own party.

Responding to Mr. Moghe’s offensive, the newly appointed national vice-president of the BJP, Vikram Verma, took the stand that it would be more pragmatic to identify the causes behind the party’s defeat rather than criticising the party organisation and the performance of the State Government.

Besides the Sanwer Assembly and Khargone parliamentary by-elections, the BJP has also recently lost the Sidhi Parliamentary and the Shivpuri and Lanji Assembly seats. During interactions with BJP cadres in the run-up to these polls, there was a noticeable sense of disenchantment and heartburn among the ruling party workers as they complained that they had been sidelined by the “representatives” of their party MPs and MLAs across many different constituencies.

The BJP workers’ common grouse has been a complete lack of coordination between those in the Government and the party organisation. They have also been complaining out that their voices are never heard.
