For implementation of works in 3 towns

Union Ministry had approved various schemes

State’s proposals are for urban transport, water supply etc.

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government on Wednesday called upon the Centre to release forthwith the outstanding amount of Rs.4,900 crore for implementation of public amenity works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) operative in Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje pointed out that the Centre had so far released Rs.598 crore for improvement of slums and Rs.368.86 crore for expansion of public utility services under the JNNURM against the State’s proposals for Rs.4,900 crore and Rs.1,000 crore, respectively.

Ms. Raje said the total population of Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar was 35.5 lakh, which constituted nearly 20 per cent of the State’s population. As many as 319 areas in the three towns are categorised as slums inhabited by 25 per cent of the population.

The letter stated that the Union Urban Development Ministry had approved various schemes in the three towns after receiving the State Government’s proposals worth Rs.5,500 crore for improvement of physical surroundings during the period of JNNURM’s execution.

The proposals pertained mainly to urban transport, water supply, sewage management, solid waste management, heritage conservation, urban renewal and basic facilities for the urban poor. The Urban Development Ministry approved proposals worth Rs.748.98 crore in general and the transport scheme for Jaipur worth Rs.469 crore in particular.

Ms. Raje said the State Government had prepared a detailed project report on the improvement of 16 slum colonies in Jaipur at an estimated expenditure of Rs.169.65 crore, while Rs.1,000 crore was proposed to be spent on the first phase of an ambitious scheme to make Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar free of slums.

Besides, the Urban Development Ministry has sanctioned projects worth Rs.105.73 crore for 80 areas identified in Ajmer and Pushkar. While a target has been set to complete these works by October 2009, other development works are slated to be taken up in various phases during the period of the Mission’s execution between 2005-06 and 2011-12.
