THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 49th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, founded by veteran trade unionist, labour economist and former President V.V. Giri, held in Hyderabad from December 15 to 17 unanimously elected K.P. Kannan, professor, as its conference president for next year. The next conference will be the golden jubilee of the founding of the Society. In a tribute to the founder and his then companion Professor V.B. Singh, the golden jubilee conference will be held in Lucknow in December 2008 at the V.V. Giri Institute of Development Studies. Prof. Kannan, a Fellow of the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, is currently a full-time member of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS), constituted by the Union government. The Hyderabad conference noted his extensive contributions to the area of labour and development that encompasses issues such as poverty and human development. It also noted his recent contributions to the understanding of India’s informal economy, through the reports of the NCEUS, and policy prescriptions for reducing the insecurity of informal workers.
