BERHAMPUR: The 18th national Taekwondo championship was inaugurated in the city on Wednesday by Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu. More than 250 participants from nine states are taking part in the championship, organised by the Orissa Academy of Martial Arts and Sports (OAMAS) at the Bijaya Indoor Hall here. Bouts in junior, sub junior and senior categories would be held during the two-day event. Secretary of the Academy of Amateur Taekwondo Federation of India, Vinod Kumar, who is attending the championship said the Korean martial art or combat sport is fast picking up in the country. It is already quite popular in north eastern states. ParticipantsIn the tournament largest chunk of participants were from north eastern states. The states attending the championship are Meghalaya, Manipur, Assam, Sikkim, Mijoram, Nagaland, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and the host Orissa. Preliminary bouts of all sections were held on the first day of the championship. The bouts were of two rounds. There was a rush at the venue during the evening as the bouts of senior division were held at that time. OAMAS secretary said the tournament would increase the popularity of the game in south Orissa.
