BERHAMPUR: The Ganjam district sugarcane growers’ association has demanded increase in procurement price. At an emergency meeting held at Aska on Wednesday, the farmers decided not to accept sugarcane cutting orders for current crushing season from the Aska cooperative sugar mill till the procurement price was revised. The meeting was attended by president of the association and former MP Dutikrushna Panda and secretary Nityananda Pradhan. The growers were demanding a procurement price of Rs. 1,200 per tonne. According to them, the price had not increased in the same ratio as the increase in the cost of irrigation, seed, fertilisers and pesticides. The farmers also wanted that the cooperative sugar mill bear the cost of transportation of sugarcane from the fields of growers to the mill. Mandatory insurance cover of sugarcane crop was also demanded. The farmers urged the mill authorities to start crushing process for the current season as early as possible as the crop was almost mature. “The mill officials should visit farmers to sign agreements rather than farmers travelling to Aska for it,” they said.
