Tourism spots in limelight

L. Renganathan

KARUR: A proposal has been drawn to improve infrastructure development works for the benefit of tourists and pilgrims visiting the Ayyarmalai shrine near Kulithalai in Karur district.

The proposal, prepared under the Rural Tourism Programme, envisages development of infrastructure facilities such as meditation hall, tourist waiting hall, improving drinking water facilities and construction of public convenience in the hill shrine at an estimate of Rs.50 lakh, according to Tourist Officer, Tiruchi, P. Pushparaj.

Karur Collector has forwarded the proposal to develop facilities at Ayyarmalai to the Director of Tourism. He in turn is expected to route that to Union Ministry of Tourism for sanction of funds, Mr. Pushparaj said. Mr. Pushparaj was here in connection with the preparation of the Tourism Master Plan for Karur district.

Deliberations

He held deliberations on Wednesday on the contours of the plan with district officials. The Tourism Master Plan envisaged development of facilities for tourists in tourist and picnic spots in the district. Initial discussions have been held for deciding the plan for 18 districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagappattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Karur and Erode districts, according to Mr. Pushparaj.

The aim was to popularise the lesser known tourist spots in those districts besides improving the necessary amenities in the more popular tourist destinations, he said. The HUDCO has been entrusted with the task of preparing the Master Plan and further discussions on taking the plan forward would be held in February next, he said.
