Training programme on water quality testing

TAMBARAM: A two-day training programme on testing water quality was held for elected representatives and staff of village panchayats in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
The programme, which began on Wednesday, started off with an appeal to participants to be forthright to the district administration and the State government on the quality of drinking water supplied to residents.
Under the National Rural Drinking Water Quality Management and Surveillance Programme of the Ministry of Rural Development, engineers of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply Board and the Department of Rural Development have started distributing free mobile water testing kits to the village panchayats.
The objective of the Central Government-funded scheme was to monitor quality of drinking water supplied to people living in rural pockets. The free mobile kits were distributed to each of the 25 constituent villages of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union (St. Thomas Mount Block) on Wednesday.
A simultaneous two-day training programme for chiefs of the rural local bodies, village assistants, members of women’s self help groups commenced.
