What they say
V.Peda Somulu
V. Peda Somulu, canine specialist:
“The cases of dog bite are seeing an upward trend. But, awareness is also increasing in urban areas and people are going for anti-rabies vaccine. A few precautions are required to prevent rabies. It is very important to get the pet dog vaccinated right from the time when it is two months old followed by a booster dose after a month. It should be vaccinated every year during its lifetime. Those having pets should be extremely careful and observe for symptoms of rabid dogs. When a dog bites a person, they should closely observe it and isolate it. Handling it in any manner out of affection is courting risk. The dog’s behaviour will be absolutely unpredictable. The dog bite victim also should take the vaccine as soon as it bit him. The vaccine should be taken on the third, seventh, 14th and 28th days and, if required, on the 90th day. Besides, as much importance should be given to countering the stray dog menace as is being given to AIDS or family planning. ”
