Only project spillway work has to be completed State will get work done with latest technology HYDERABAD: The Congress has expressed confidence that the State government will take up construction of the dam of Polavaram project before next elections and complete the work within a short time. Reacting to criticism of the Opposition targeted at the government in the wake of the National Environmental Appellate Authority cancelling the clearance for the project, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee in-charge president G.S. Rao said only spillway work was left in the project. The government will get the work completed with latest technology. He criticised the Opposition for presenting a misleading picture that it was all over for the project. The government would shortly present its case to the authority and get the clearance, he said and appealed to farmers of East and West Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts not to nurse apprehensions about the completion of the project. Mr. Rao also said the APCC would request the government to extend facilities of Backward Classes to eligible poor students of Kapu community until they were included among BCs. He expressed hope that the formalities connected with including Kapus among BCs would completed before next elections. Dig at CPIAPCC chief spokesman Paladugu Venkata Rao said the Communist Party of India (CPI) would do a disservice to Communist movement if it stuck to its decision to try for a third political alternative in the State. The party would undermine its strength if it tried to seek cover behind another political force. Another spokesman N. Tulasi Reddy said several other projects alongside Polavaram did not have various clearances. Yet, they were progressing. There was no need for alarm at the action of the appellate authority.
