UGC, Centre encouraging setting up new varsities

MADURAI: Queen Mary’s College and Presidency College in Chennai are likely to be upgraded as universities the next academic year. A proposal to upgrade the Government Meenakshi College for Women here is being forwarded to the State Government.

Proposals

The proposals with regard to the Chennai colleges are under consideration and a Bill to upgrade them may be introduced in the budget session of the Assembly, A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

With regard to the Madurai college, he said a final recommendation would be made to the Government soon.

Dr. Ramasamy was here to participate in the inaugural function of an orientation course for the newly recruited teachers in various government colleges at Madurai Kamaraj University.

According to Dr. Ramasamy, the colleges would be like any other State university and were being upgraded in view of their inherent strengths in teaching and research. “Both Queen Mary’s and Presidency colleges are old and established autonomous institutions. Their postgraduate departments and research activities are strong and hence came the proposal of upgrading them.”

He said that the University Grants Commission and the Centre too were encouraging the setting up of new universities or upgrading meritorious institutions. “That will give access to more funding support and grants.”

Asked about the announcement of setting up of a Central University in the State, Dr. Ramasamy said the Government was yet to finalise the location.
