Orientation programme for new lecturers

Special Correspondent

It will help them keep abreast of latest knowledge and train them in new teaching techniques

CHENNAI: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy inaugurated an orientation programme for newly recruited government college lecturers here on Wednesday, in an effort to “make teachers agents of socio-economic change and national development.”

The intensive training programme will expose the lecturers to resources to keep themselves abreast of new knowledge and train themselves in the latest processes, methodologies and techniques of teaching, said Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran.

The programme was designed by experts from the UGC Academic Staff Colleges of the University of Madras, Madurai Kamaraj University, Bharathidasan University and Bharathiar University.

First batch

While 965 recruits have been enrolled for the 22-day inaugural programme, another batch of 1,062 recruits will be admitted in a month, said Mr. Ponmudy.

This was the first such large-scale training programme where participants were being paid for the duration of the course.

The Government had allocated Rs. 87 lakh for the first two batches.

If needed, the courses could be extended, the Minister said.

Change with times

Teachers needed to change with the times and ensure that their knowledge was up to date, Mr. Ponmudy said.

Earlier, they had the same knowledge from the time they began teaching till they retired, but in the current scenario, perpetual learning was essential, he said.
