Shooting
JAIPUR: Mairaj Ahmed Khan claimed his maiden skeet title firing an impressive 142 out of 150 to win the gold medal in the 51st National shotgun shooting championship at the Oases Ranges here on Wednesday. Mairaj was three shots better than former champion Allan Daniel Peoples after both shot 24 targets in the engrossing final as the event stretched into the third day due to a high number of entries which the organisers at the brand new ranges struggled to cope with. The Uttar Pradesh marksman represented Chhattisgarh here and performed better than what the other Indian skeet shooters usually achieve in this version of shotgun shooting. Mairaj shot a series of 24, 22, 25, 23, 24 in the qualification round for a total of 118. Peoples was three shots behind at 115 (22, 22, 23, 24, 24). Man Singh impressesDelhi’s Man Singh shot 136 to win the bronze medal, but the way the junior shooter handled the pressure in the final while pipping the seasoned Sarvdeep Mann and P.P. Singh to the fourth and fifth places augurs well for the future. Man Singh, who also figured in the junior section, deservedly won the gold medal with a total of 114, while Smit Singh of Punjab claimed the silver with 113. Mohammed Shiraz Sheikh of U.P. was third with 109. In the team championship, Punjab won the gold medal ahead of Army. The Punjab shooters — P.P. Singh, Mann and Arozepal Singh — tallied 327 out of 375 while Army managed 320. Delhi came third with 319. The results: Men: Skeet: 1. Mairaj Ahmed Khan (Cht) (118, 24) 142, 2. Allan Daniel Peoples (Inf) (115, 24) 139, 3. Man Singh (Del) (114, 22) 136, 4. Sarvdeep Mann (Pun) (112, 23) 135, 5. P.P. Singh (Pun) (110, 23) 133, 6. Smit Singh (Pun) (113, 19) 132. Team: 1. Punjab (P.P. Singh, Arozepal Singh, Mann) 327, 2. Army (Ashok Kumar, Baljit Singh, Gagan Kumar) 320, 3. Delhi (Man Singh, P. S. Sodhi, H. S. Bedi) 319. — Principal Correspondent
