DU to honour Gordon Brown
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be honoured by Delhi University in January next year when he arrives here on a State visit.
Mr. Brown will be conferred an honorary doctorate (honoris causa) in recognition of his achievements in the field of academics and public services.
“Mr. Brown is a well educated person and a great luminary in his field. He would be awarded the degree in January. The time and date will be decided in a few days’ time as per the diplomatic commitments of the British Prime Minister,” said M. L. Singla, Dean of Examinations at Delhi University, on Wednesday.
There will be a special convocation for the visiting guest, but the venue is yet to be finalised.
“We will take a decision on the venue soon. Whether the convocation is held in the University or not depends on a lot of things like Mr. Brown’s security and his schedule,” Prof. Singla added.
Armed with a first-class honours degree, Mr. Brown became the youngest ever Rector of Edinburgh University in 1972. He has also been a university and college lecturer and has written a number of books. Earlier in 2003, former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami was conferred an honorary doctorate of Delhi University.
