Reopening of colleges postponed by a week

Chitra V. Ramani

It is because valuation is going on at a slow pace

It was scheduled for January 16

250 principals attend meeting

Bangalore: The reopening of degree colleges affiliated to Bangalore University, scheduled for January 16, has been postponed to January 23.

The This decision was taken at the principals’ meeting on Wednesday.

Over 250 principals from various colleges under Bangalore University participated in the meeting, which was chaired by Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath.

Speaking to The Hindu, M. Prakash, principal of Seshadripuram College, Yelahanka, said that the decision was taken due to the valuation pressure. “The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss the calendar of events for the under-graduate courses. A majority of those who attended the meeting felt that colleges could not be reopened as the valuation of answer scripts was going on at a snail’s pace,” he said.

He said that the dates have been postponed mainly to accommodate valuation of the answer scripts. “This time around, valuation has been decentralised and the university has re-introduced coding of answer scripts.

“However, the university has not made any preparations for the teachers who come for valuation.

“Many a time, teachers have had to go back to their colleges owing to lack of proper accommodation,” he said.

Dr. Prakash said that revaluation of Commerce and English papers was being stalled. Over 40 per cent of the university strength is commerce.

“Many colleges that have more than four sections in commerce branch are not sending all their teachers. Only one or two are sent. Aided teachers are not interested in going to valuation work due to lack of remuneration. All these have stalled the valuation work,” he said.

He said that the principals had unanimously agreed to postpone the reopening by a week.

They also resolved to send all teachers — aided and unaided — for valuation work.

Prof. Ranganath said that only routine issues were discussed at the meeting. He also said that the principals’ meeting is organised every four months.
