A helping hand for those without limbs

Rotary Bangalore is organising a free limb camp

HANDY: G.R. Vasanth Kumar, president, Rotary Bangalore, Peenya, displaying the LN 4 prosthetic hand meant for beneficiaries of the Jaipur Limb camp, in Bangalore on Wednesday.

BANGALORE: To commemorate its silver jubilee year, Rotary Bangalore, Peenya, under its community service project initiatives, will organise a free Jaipur Limb Camp for polio-affected and people with disabilities at the V.S. Jain Sangh, Ganesh Bagh, Bhagwan Mahaveer Road (Infantry Road) here.

The eight-day camp will start from January 3.

G.R. Vasanth Kumar, president of Rotary Bangalore, Peenya, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the organisation had been conducting the camp for the past 10 years, where artificial limbs, callipers and crutches were provided to the beneficiaries free.

Mr. Kumar said in this 11th camp, the organisation plans to help 3,000 beneficiaries from Karnataka and other States. Beneficiaries would be provided food and accommodation at the venue. Eighteen technicians from Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayatha Samiti, Jaipur, will tailor the artificial legs on the spot according to the requirements.

“Apart from providing artificial legs in this camp, we will also provide artificial hand (LN 4 prosthetic hand) free to the amputees. We have received 20 pieces from the United States as samples, the manufacturing cost of which is around Rs. 4,000 per unit. Depending on the requirement, we would like to get more. One can write, ride a bicycle, drive a car with the help of this hand,” Mr. Kumar said.

Mr. Kumar said the camp would provide polio corrective surgeries for the needy which will be conducted at M.S. Ramaiah Hospital. Nearly 200 such surgeries are planned in this camp, he said.

At the previous camp held during last January, 516 artificial limbs, 960 callipers, 340 crutches, 120 wheel chairs and 270 tri-cycles were provided, he said.

Gautam Chand Nahar, chairman of the camp, and Rajeswari Danappa, community service director, were present.
