World Bank team to review project

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Joint Review Mission of the World Bank will visit Karnataka next month to review the implementation of the bank-aided Technical Education Quality Improvement Project.

Officials of the Technical Education Department told The Hindu that the bank’s team would evaluate the execution of the project for three days from January 28.

The team reviewed the project in May last and termed its implementation as “satisfactory.”

The project is being executed since 2004 for revamping technical education in the State. As many as 14 colleges have benefited from the scheme.

The present project would be completed in another few months and the Government has decided to seek Rs. 200 crore aid from the World Bank to continue the project in the second phase.

The second phase would focus on research and faculty development in engineering colleges and would commence from the next year end, the officials said.

In the first phase, the bank has granted $250 million for the implementation of the project in 13 States — Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Kerala.

The project helped increase the quality of graduates in critical areas, increase in employment and increase enrolment for postgraduate programmes.

The colleges utilised the funds for upgradation of infrastructure and training of the teaching staff.
