Three die in as many road accidents

Bangalore: Three persons were killed in as many accidents in the city on Wednesday and one of the deaths trigged a public protest at Nayandanahalli on Bangalore-Mysore Road where a man was run over by a petrol tanker. The victim, Venkateshwara (50), a resident of Kengeri and a Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd. employee, was on his way to work when a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus hit his two-wheeler. He lost balance and fell when the petrol tanker ran over him, killing him on the spot.

This led to residents of Nayandanahalli to stage a protest demanding a speed-breaker as, according to them, the spot was an accident-prone zone. They dispersed only after the police told them they would convey their demand to the authorities concerned. A case has been registered.

Gundappa (31), a goldsmith of Ramohalli, died in hospital after he was run over by a car on Monday. The police said that the accident occurred on the Ring Road, near Illiasnagar. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. A case has been registered.

In the third accident, a motorcyclist was run over by a tipper lorry on Arkavathy Main Road, Hegdenagar. Banaswadi police identified the dead as Anand (31), resident of Kasturinagar and a private company employee. The victim died on the spot while the driver fled the scene. A case has been registered.

Suicide

A woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her home on Rama Mandir Road, coming under Kamakshipalya Police Station limits, on Monday. The police gave the name of the victim as Shantamma (23), wife of Ravi, a vegetable vendor. They said that Shantamma and Ravi had been married for the past three years and had had a child. The incident came to light when Ravi came home for lunch on Monday.

Meanwhile, Shantamma’s mother, Shivamma, filed a case of dowry harassment against Ravi saying he used to pester Shantamma for more dowry. The police arrested Ravi and are investigating.

In another incident, a man’s body was found on the tracks near Channapatna Railway Station on Wednesday. The police identified him as Manjunatha (21), a garment unit employee and native of Chikka Arasikere of Maddur. The Bangalore City Railway Police Station has registered a case.

Shop looted

A petty shop on Laggere Main Road was looted on Tuesday. The incident came to light on Wednesday when the owner Raghunatha Bhat came to open the shop. The Rajagopalanagar police said those involved had cut open the rolling shutters and taken away goods valued at Rs. 5,000. The police have registered a case.
