CPI(M) undecided on poll tie-up

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) appears to have been caught in a dilemma on entering into a seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress in the State to fight the coming elections to the State Assembly.

The confusing statements of State secretariat members of CPI(M) Maruti Manpade and S.Y. Gurushant on the question of whether the party would have tie-up with the Congress or any other secular forces in coming elections speaks for itself the difficult decisions the party has to take.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Manpade and Mr. Gurushant said that the main aim of the party in the coming elections would be to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party and for which the party would do everything to avert a split of secular votes.

Asked whether the party would have any tie-up with the Congress or any other party with secular credentials, they said that the party would not have any alliance with the Congress in the State and denied the reports appearing in as section of the press that the CPI(M) had sent feelers to the Congress for an electoral understanding.

They said that the four-day State conference of the party scheduled to be held in Mysore from January 21 would take a final decision on the issue.

Although the election results of Gujarat would not have any impact on the elections in the State, Mr Manpade said that the Congress should be blamed for its debacle of not turning the tide in its favour in Gujarat into votes.

The CPI(M) leaders said that the party would not have any tie-up with the Bahujan Samaj Party in the State and explore the possibility of emergence of a third front with Samajwadi Party in the lead.

The party has decided to field its candidates in 14 Assembly constituencies and the figure is likely to go up after assessing the political situation in the days to come.

Conference

The national conference of the CPI(M) held once in three years would be held at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu from March 28 to April 3 next year. This would be preceded by the conferences of all the State units and the district and taluk units throughout the country.

Mr. Manpade and Mr. Gurushanth said the six-day conference is considered crucial now with the volatile political situation and it would take several far-reaching decisions.

Mr. Manpade said the district conference of the party would be held from January 4 to 6 in Gulbarga.
