Poetry from young pens
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: It is not every day that one comes across children as young as 12 express their experiences through poetry whose tone can be described as one of “full-grown awareness.”
Yet this is what students of Rishi Valley have come up with: those between the ages of 12 and 18 from the school have penned a book of poems, which was published earlier this year by the Sahitya Akademi.
The collection of poems, titled Poetry with Young People, will be launched by Toto Funds the Arts at Crossword Bookstore at 7 p.m. on January 3, 2008.
Experiences
Their poetry, the product of a decade-long workshop conducted by writer Gieve Patel deals with a wide variety of experiences, from moving camaraderie to violent aggression and from a deep love and understanding of nature.
There are also poems about friends, animals, neighbours, teachers, lovers and mothers. And there is a bonus too: 19 illustrations by four of India’s foremost artists, Nilima Sheikh, Anju Dodiya, Sudhir Patwardhan and Atul Dodiya, are part of the collection.
Distinguished actor Tom Alter and three former Rishi Valley students Raeesa Vakil, Harsha Vinay and Siddharth Sareen will read the poems at the launch and Gieve Patel will introduce the book and moderate the discussion.
