PUDUKOTTAI: A biography on the life and works of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy depicting her multifaceted roles as a social reformer, patriot, woman activist besides her achievements as the first woman in breaking many barriers, was released here recently. Titled ‘Maadhar kula maanickam,’ the book throws light on the ordeals she had to undergo to achieve her desired objectives in the cause of women’s literacy. Releasing the book, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran listed out the struggles the late Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy underwent in her life with determination. She dedicated her life in the cause of empowerment of women. The Vice-Chancellor of Tiruvalluvar University, L. Kannan, said that Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy was a symbol of compassion and humanism. In her was a rare combination of multi-skills with an iron will. The author of the book Dayananda Chandrasekaran of Thilagavathiar Tiruvarul Adheenam in Machuvadi near here said that he had collected rare photographs for publishing the autobiography. Special attention had been paid to several interesting anecdotes in the life of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy. He specifically recalled Dr. Reddy’s role as a great thinker with mastery in medicine and literature. The Chief Educational Officer S. Chellam, who received the first copy of the book, paid rich tributes to Dr. Reddy’s selfless services. She also appealed to women students to emulate her example. Earlier, students of Muthulakshmi Reddy Primary School staged a play to drive home the efforts taken by the late leader in starting the cancer research institute at Adyar. Several physicians offered felicitations.
