PUDUCHERRY: Around one lakh people, majority of them school students, visited the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children here, which came to a close on Thursday. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy delivered the valedictory address at the seven-day exhibition. He made an appeal to the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), sponsors of the event, to train teachers to tap the scientific talent in the students. The country needs trained teachers to bring out the best in the students, Mr. Rangasamy said. Outlining his government’s initiative to promote science and technology among the students, he said the administration plans to increase the cash prize from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000 for young students in the Union Territory. The government also plans to increase the number of students chosen for the award, he added. The administration plans to create a science and research wing in the Education Department to provide a platform for the students to undertake research. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan made an appeal to the NCERT to train the teachers in Smart Schools launched by the administration.
