AMBUR: The Ambur Municipality is in need of funds to re-lay the roads battered by the recent rain. Several areas have been affected and the municipality has approached the district administration seeking Rs. 3-crore flood relief.

Enquiries revealed that six-and-a-half km of cement road and seven km of tar road were badly damaged.

According to sources, Ambur suffered the maximum damage owing to the rain, compared to the neighbouring Vaniyambadi and Tirupattur. The town was spread out over 19 sq. km and this was cited as one of the reasons for the extensive damage. The total length of street roads in Ambur town is over 94 km.

Residents said that the Vaniyambadi MLA, Abdul Basith, and the Ambur Municipality chairman, Nizar Ahmed, assured them to expedite the relief measures. This would work only if the civic body had enough funds. The representative of a political party said that the worst affected areas include A. Kaspa, B. Kaspa, Mottukolai, By Pass Road, S.K. Road, Bazaar Road, Bethlehem, K.M. Nagar and Anna Nagar. The areas were inundated and four houses collapsed. There were no drainage facilities in the By Pass Road, A. Kaspa, Bazaar Road and S.K. Road, which resulted in inundation, damaging the roads. The municipality was planning underground drainage network scheme, but it could not be implemented owing to the scarcity of groundwater in Ambur town.

According to sources, water from Nayakanneri (hilly terrain area) flowed into Anaimedu through the distribution channel. As it had been encroached upon, water flowed on to the roadside. This led to inundation of the Bypass Road and Chinna Kamara Street in A. Kaspa area. As a result, more than 300 houses in areas, including Chinna Kamara Street in A. Kaspa and Ellai Amman Koil Street, suffered. Residents said that potholes developed on the By Pass Road connecting Ambur and Pernambut. This led to the bursting of Serangal water pipeline passing through the By Pass Road to the Ambur town. Drinking water was being supplied to the town from Serangal, which came under the Pernambut block. This resulted in a large-scale disruption of traffic for three days. The municipality, on a priority basis, had taken up the pipeline repair works.
