Formal clearance in this regard is expected in January Manufacturing Investment Region also may come up in Punjab Chandigarh: The Centre has agreed in principle to link Mumbai and Amritsar through a freight corridor to boost domestic and international freight activities. The Centre’s decision to this effect was conveyed to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal when he called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, an official spokesman said here on Thursday. A formal clearance in this regard is expected in January, Media Advisor to Chief Minister Harcharan Bains said. The Centre had earlier proposed a freight corridor up to Ludhiana but Punjab had urged on taking it to the Indo-Pak border. He said the Prime Minister assured Mr. Badal that Punjab’s case for setting up of Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Information Technology would also be considered on priority basis. Mr. Bains said the Centre had also agreed to set up a Manufacturing Investment Region (MIR) in Punjab to brighten the prospects of trade and commerce in the State. Mr. Badal informed the Prime Minister that the setting up of MIR in the State would be instrumental in reviving the sick industries and check the trend of industries shifting to the neighbouring States, which provide special industrial package of liberal concessions and incentives. Responding to the demands put forth by Mr. Badal, the Prime Minister assured the Chief Minister that he would personally review the position of the different projects and proposals sent by Punjab Government with the Ministries concerned, Mr. Bains claimed. – PTI
