PUDUCHERRY: Republican Party of India leader and MP Ramdas Athawale on Thursday appealed to Left parties not to withdraw support to the United Progressive Alliance Government. The Left parties’ continued opposition to the UPA over the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal would weaken secular forces, he said. His party would remain with the UPA even if the Left withdrew support. Speaking to reporters here, Mr. Athawale said the Left should reconsider its approach towards the UPA Government in the wake of the Gujarat election results, which should be viewed with “seriousness” by the secular parties so as to defeat “communal forces.” Though the party did not see anything wrong in the Government pursuing the Indo-US nuclear deal, it was concerned about the economic policy of the UPA. He urged the UPA Government to take immediate steps to check the rise in prices of essential commodities.
