Modernisation project underway at Golden Rock railway workshop

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: Work on modernising the Golden Rock Central Railway Workshop, at a cost of Rs.90 crore, will be completed in a few years, Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra said here on Thursday.

The Railway Board has nominated the workshop as a nodal agency for overhauling high horse power locomotives. A separate project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.16 crore to develop facilities for handling General Motors (GM) loco sub assemblies. It will involve acquisition of about Rs.10-crore worth of mechanical equipment and civil engineering works to the tune of Rs.6 crore.

Mr. Chopra laid the foundation stone for the civil engineering works and also flagged off a couple of modified metre gauge locomotives to be exported to Tanzania. The ISO 14001 certificate, awarded by the QMS Certification Services, for environment management was presented to the workshop in his presence.

Commending the workshop management for obtaining the ISO certificate, Mr. Chopra requested the officials to take up greening of the massive campus as it could give additional revenue and meet the wood requirement of the workshops. He announced cash rewards of Rs.10,000 and Rs.25,000 to the workshop in recognition of its achievements on the export front and getting the ISO certification.

Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, V. Carmelus, said the workshop was the only one in the country refurbishing locomotives, coaches and wagons. It was the first to get the ISO 9002 certificate.

Chief Workshop Manager S. Rangarajan said with the despatch of two locos to Tanzania, the workshop has so far exported 104 locos to African and Asian countries.
