CHENNAI: A four-day exhibition and a two-day seminar on plastics will be held in the city from February 21.

The international exhibition will be held under the aegis of Chennai Plastics Manufacturers and Merchants Association. The aim of the event would be to improve production and engage more people in the industry, association members said.

The per capita consumption of plastic in Chennai is around 10 kg, where as in the State it is around 6.75 kg, the manufacturers said. In rural areas, it is 4 kg and could be increased, they added.

At the launch of ‘PlasTec 2008’ on Wednesday, members appealed to the government to start courses for school dropouts.

Currently, the industry with 7,500 registered and an equal number of unregistered units in the State, employs nearly two lakh people directly and another three lakh indirectly. Yet, the production from the units in the State provides only half of the State’s requirement of plastic.

But, by setting up a raw material manufacturing industry in south India, the units would sizably increase their production, members said.

At the exhibition, there would be stalls with sophisticated modern plastic products. About 30 local units have booked space, the organisers said.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, Industries Commissioner Rajeev Ranjan, Small Industry Secretary P. Selvam and senior officials of SIDCO, SISI and CIPET participated.
