Shocking

Pakistan leader Benazir Bhutto’s assassination is shocking. It has dashed the hopes of democracy being restored in that country. Both India and Pakistan have suffered enormously in recent times due to terrorism and violence. Benazir has met the same fate as that of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Besides political leaders, thousands of innocent people have fallen victim to terrorism in the last few years. India and Pakistan should sink their differences. Active cooperation between the two countries is an essential prerequisite for defeating the forces of terrorism in the subcontinent.

N.S. Venkataraman,

That Benazir has fallen to an assassin’s bullet is unfortunate. Her death is a great loss to Pakistan. She worked hard towards achieving democracy. The January 8 elections are unlikely to be held in Pakistan.

The news of Benazir’s assassination is most shocking for all those who believe in democracy. The people were looking forward to the restoration of democracy after the January elections. But terrorists hitherto supported by governments in the name of jihad against India have strengthened their root in Pakistan to the extent of not caring for Pervez Musharraf. The anarchy being perpetrated by them with the active support of the Taliban is becoming visible.

The assassination marks an inappropriate end of the life of a leader who was a beacon of hope to millions of Pakistanis. The tragedy has struck at a time when it appeared that there was a chance of a moderate leader assuming centre stage in Pakistan. It is unfortunate that Benazir had to pay the price for being a fearless champion of democracy.

P. Senthil Kumar,

The sad and violent end of an illustrious political career exposes the anarchic scene in Pakistan. Gen. (retd.) Musharraf, who has shed the uniform to don the role of a democrat, should be credited with creating a chaotic state where life is at peril not only for the political class but also for the common masses. Fundamentalism and terrorism, its offshoot, breed nothing but hatred and violence. Benazir’s death has created a vacuum, difficult to fill, in Pakistani politics.

N. Divakar,

Mysore

Pakistan has been plagued by many acts of violence in recent times, which have culminated in the assassination of a young and dynamic leader. The perpetrators of the heinous act have derailed the chances of Pakistan’s return to normality.

N. Nageswaran,

Chennai
