National Basketball League

PUDUCHERRY: The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) will launch the National Basketball League in October 2008, BFI Secretary General Harish Sharma said. The top six finishers of the ongoing 58th National basketball championship will compete in the league.

The teams will be allowed to have two guest players, either local or foreign.

Sharma said that the BFI’s Technical Commission will decide the league format. “ESPN has agreed in principal to telecast the matches, but we are open to other broadcasters as well,” he said.

The league will be conducted for one month in two or three venues. “In due course a similar league for women will be introduced. But for now, it will be only for men,” Sharma said.

He informed that the BFI has made a bid for the 2010 FIBA Commonwealth basketball championship.

It was also mentioned that the 59th senior National basketball championship will be held at Surat. — Sports Reporter
