Sensex pares initial gains

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index pared initial gains and closed at 20216.72, up by 24.20 points. It closed at 20192.52 on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the 30-share index had shot up by 131 points and touched an intra-day high of 20323.76. The 50-share Nifty on the National Stock Exchange also advanced by 10.75 points to 6081.50.

Analysts said that foreign institutional investors were believed to be covering short positions in the futures and options segment on Thursday.

Small-cap shares attracted hectic buying support with its index soaring by 286.25 points at close.

Rupee ends steady

The rupee closed steady at 39.4150/4250 a dollar on Thursday in limited activity with year-end considerations weighing heavily on investors. The Indian unit was trapped in a narrow range of 39.38 and 39.44 during the day. It resumed at 39.41/43 from Wednesday’s close of 39.4150/4250. — PTI
