BERHAMPUR: South Orissa Drama Festival 2008 will be organised in the city from January 3. The festival is being organised by the ‘Ganjam Zilla Mancha Kalakar Sammilani’ for the last 17 years. Like earlier years, the venue of the drama festival would be the Kavisurya Rangamanch. The festival would continue for six days and amateur drama troupes from different districts of south Orissa would participate in the festival. This time also the organisers gave preference to rural troupes, said President of the Sammilani Balaram Das. The rural talents of south Orissa who kept alive theatre movement in the era of television would be honoured during the festival. General Secretary of the organisation, Ramesh Moharana said the plays to be enacted on stage during the festival were selected by a panel of theatre personalities according to authenticity of the scripts. Addressing a press conference , organisation convenor Nagendra Tripathy said that the State Cultural Department has not been promoting theatre in the State. “Although Cultural Minister Suryanarayan Patro hails from the city, more than a decade-old drama festival is yet to get the government sponsorship,” alleged Tripathy.
