Farmers stage protest against agent’s action

Staff Correspondent

He told two farmers to transfer their land in his name as guarantee against the loans

Farmers demand return of land records

After intervention by officials, the agent agrees

DAVANGERE: Two farmers along with their family members and a large number of Raitha Sangha activists staged a hunger strike in front of the shop of an agent at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard on Thursday.

They were demanding that the agent return their land records and re-register their lands to them as they had cleared their debts long back.

The farmers erected a tent in front of the agent’s shop and staged a dharna.

Immediately, Manjula and other senior officials of the APMC, president of the Davangere Dallali Association Kusuma Shetty and other office-bearers rushed to the spot and discussed the matter with the farmers and the agent.

The agent finally agreed to return the land documents of the farmers and re-register the lands in the farmer’s names. Following this, the farmers and sangha withdrew the strike on the condition that the agent should stick to his promise and fulfil it within a week.

The farmers, Nagaraj and Kaidal had borrowed Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 55, 000 respectively from an agent in the APMC.

They pledged the land documents as guarantee against their loan amount. The agent reportedly told the farmers that his keeping the records was of no use and they should transfer the ownership of the lands to him.

Since the agent said that he would give the loan only if the property was transferred, the farmers transferred the ownership and registered the lands in the name of the agent.

The farmers had arranged for the loan amount and repaid the commission agent along with the interest some time back.

The farmers alleged that the agent said that he had given the records to someone else and all their efforts to get their documents and re-registering the lands in their name went in vain.

Finally the farmers decided to stage a hunger strike from Thursday.

The sangha intervened and appealed to the agent to return the land records of the farmer. When its appeals were ignored it decided to support the farmers in their agitation.
