Children to be screened for heart ailments on January 4

SATTUR: A camp to screen children up to 12 years for heart ailments would be held at Virudhunagar on January 5, the Minister for Backward Classes, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, has said.

Speaking at a special public grievance meeting here on Thursday, he said that medical officers from Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital would screen the children. The affected children would be provided surgery at Government or select private hospitals.

Stating that special camps would be conducted Assembly constituency-wise, he said it was a pioneer scheme in the State. He asked the officials to act as a bridge for the people to get the benefits of the Government. The petitions received at the camp would be processed within 15 days and all eligible persons would be provided with the benefits, he added.

The Minister said that a proposal for underground drainage scheme in Sattur at a cost of Rs.22.5 crore has been sent to the Government. The contract for the bridge in Irukkangudi has been cancelled for inordinate delay and fresh tenders would be floated soon, he added.

The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that a total of 1,2651 persons were given benefits to the tune of Rs. 5.37 crore under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Memorial Maternity Assistance Scheme in the current fiscal.

The Minister distributed benefits worth Rs. 18.74 lakhs to 340 persons on the occasion.
