BHUBANESWAR: Pointing out that they were forced to do distress selling, traditional fisherfolk on Thursday demanded that the Government should provide basic infrastructure such as storage facility and make their coast free from intrusions. At a consultation on ‘community-based cooperative marketing of fisheries products’, organised by Ganjam-based United Artists’ Association (UAA) and Samudram, an NGO, fisherwomen spoke extensively as to how they had managed to establish their market links by ensuring quality of the fish products. However, they rued that lack of cold storage facility compel them to hand over products to local middlemen at very lower prices. Moreover, fishermen accused that over 700 boats from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh were intruding State’s sea area frequently. They snatch away livelihood of a few thousands of traditional fishing families. UAA secretary Mangaraj Panda said they had done away with more than one middleman concept in the fish trading.
