Chittoor: The government has passed the Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act with an intention to safeguard women from matrimonial cheating and also to prevent bigamous marriages, said Virupaksha Dattatreya Goud, secretary of District Legal Services Authority. Talking to The Hindu, he said registration of marriages performed is mandatory under this act. It will be applicable to marriages performed by persons belonging to any religion or caste and also includes remarriages, he stated. The bride, bridegroom and their parents and guardians should inform the marriage officer about the weddings within a period of 30 days stipulated in the act. Otherwise a fine of Rs. 100 will be levied on them. The certificate issued under this Act is conclusive proof of the marriage. The requisite forms will be supplied to the party free of cost. The district Collector has been appointed as registrar of the marriages for proper implementation of the Act. An information desk has been opened at Naya Seva Sadhan on the premises of district court Chittoor for the convenience of the public to get information about it, said Mr. Goud.
