Total loss in Theni put at Rs.11 crore

Staff Reporter

Flood relief to the tune of Rs.4 lakh disbursed

Four persons killed in flash floods

14 supply canals damaged

Theni: Total loss of crops, roads, tanks and bridges due to recent flash flood in the district was around Rs.11.10 crore, according to initial estimates of the district administration.

Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, Collector Har Sahay Meena said that even as comfortable storage in Periyar, Vaigai and Sothuparai dams cheered farmers, damage to standing crops and breach in irrigation canals had dampened their enthusiasm. Loss of human lives and cattle, destruction of huts, and damage of roads and bridges were the dark side of the flood.

A total of 57 huts were destroyed completely and 515 damaged partially in the district.

Four persons, including three men and a woman, were killed in flash floods.

Flood relief to the tune of Rs.4 lakh had been given the victims’ family members so far.

Public Works Department estimated that the loss due to damage of three tanks was Rs.6.3 lakh.

A total of 14 supply canals were damaged.

Highways stretching 184.42 kms, 55 km-long municipal roads and 36.61 km long panchayat roads were also destroyed. Besides, 38 small culverts in municipal and panchayat limits were damaged.

The district administration had offered 113 Government buildings at villages to accommodate persons affected by the torrential showers. With less damage in villages, majority of buildings were not utilised for this purpose, he added.

Precautionary measures taken by the district administration had prevented loss of lives and properties in the district, Mr. Meena pointed out.

The district administration sent proposals to the government to undertake relief and repair works.
