HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has expressed concern at the slow pace of distribution of milch animals to beneficiaries under the Pasukranti scheme of the State government. Against 1.32 lakh cows and buffaloes targeted to be procured from various States and distributed by March-end, only 15,179 animals were handed over to beneficiaries so far, the Chief Minister was told at a meeting on Thursday to review the Pasukranti and Jeevakranti programmes. An official release said he was told that the delay was due to problems in identification of beneficiaries, 90 per cent of whom were SCs and STs. The slow progress in documentation and release of loan by banks was also conveyed to him. The Government staff could not meet the requirements of banks in establishing various linkages, including sureties. Animal Husbandry Minister Mandali Budha Prasad told reporters after the meeting that the Government decided to procure cows and buffaloes from other parts of the country since only 24 per cent of the available cattle belonged to quality breed. On the Jeevakranti scheme to supply sheep and goats, Mr. Budha Prasad said it was decided to extend to beneficiaries the 50 per cent subsidy available under Pasukranthi. Dr. Reddy gave consent for absorption of 103 veterinary graduates into the department. The meeting was attended by Priyadarshi Dash, Special Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry, and I. Mohan, Director, Animal Husbandry.
