BJP petitions SHRC against eviction notices

Notices to 1,623 farmers in 16 villages of U. Kothapalli mandal

Farmers cultivating the said land since 75 years

HYDERABAD: The state unit of BJP on Thursday urged the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to direct the Government to withdraw eviction notices issued to 1,623 farmers in 16 villages of U. Kothapalli mandal in East Godavari district.

In a memorandum submitted to SHRC chairperson B. Subhashan Reddy, a delegation led by state BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya said that farmers belonging to weaker sections had been cultivating 566 acres of Government land for the past 75 years. They were eking out their living by taking up agriculture in this piece of land, for which they were also paying taxes. But recently notices were issued following directions from the High Court asking farmers to vacate the lands. It was learnt that that the Government issued notices by treating the lands as tanks as per the High Court orders, the BJP leaders said.

They said the lands were getting water through canals of Dowleswaram barrage and Yeleru reservoir and there were no tanks in that region.

The delegation urged the Commission to direct the Government to submit a report to the court on the factual position of the lands.
