NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party here on Thursday questioned the sincerity of the expression of regret by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the violence in Nandigram. It pointed out that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was silent about reports that the Central Bureau of Investigation had confirmed the terrorising of witnesses of the violence. BJP spokesperson Javadekar made three points: one, the Left party’s cadre was continuing to terrorise witnesses; two, even on Wednesday the Chief Minister blamed Maoists not his own party cadre for what happened; and three, bogus complaints had been made against members of the Central Reserve Police Force to stop them from doing their work honestly. The party also condemned the beating up of its candidate Bansi Raut contesting the Bolagarh Assembly by-election. Mr. Javadekar alleged that the candidate was beaten up “mercilessly” by the son of a former MLA, whose death had caused the by-election. On the continued violence against Christians in Orissa, the BJP said it “condemned violence from both sides.”
