CHENNAI: The Washington Post calls his work “food for the eye.” Noted dancer Dana Tai Soon Burgess, founder and artistic director of the dance troupe ‘Dana tai Soon Burgess and Co’ will be in the city till January 14. Mr. Burgess will participate in a workshop and also provide lessons to students, dancers, teachers of modern dance as well as the public. He will also visit local cultural institutions such as Kalakshetra. He plans to work on a collaborative project featuring dancers of the John Britto Dance Company and members of ‘Dana tai Soon Burgess and Co’ in mid-January. Cultural envoy programmeThis visit is a part of the U.S. Department of State cultural envoy programme which invites American artists to travel abroad to participate in programmes including short-term residency workshops and classes. These activities, according to the U.S. Department of State, “help countries to strengthen their own cultural institutions as well as build sustainable linkages and relationships between American individuals and institutions and their foreign counterparts.” Award-winning dancer Mr. Burgess has created dances over the last 15 years that synthesise Eastern and Western aesthetics. His dances and choreography are inspired by various dance forms, martial arts, visual arts as well as his personal journeys across the world and its cultures.
