Winning streak: Students of Nalanda Vidya Niketan participating in a race on the occasion of annual sports day held in Vijayawada on Thursday. — VIJAYAWADA: The many facets of Indian culture and heritage came out in full display during a series of performances given by the students of Nalanda Vidya Niketan at the colourful inaugural of their 10th annual sports meet for 2007-08 held here on Thursday. If the Banjara dance provided glimpses of the myriad hues of a deeply traditional and a highly impressive culture, the presentation of illustrious personalities turned many a head in the audience, who consisted of mostly parents, staff and others. Moment to cherishYoung ones dressed in brilliant colours symbolising the Banjara culture left a pleasant feeling among the visitors, even as the drum beats and music provided by the artistes added to the intensity of the moment. “Vaddiyanam techchade banjara”… the flowing words with loads of youthful promise and family affection made the occasion lighter and very enjoyable. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar found a place in the illustrious gallery of all-time greats like Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and the Buddha, as students in their respective make-ups made a wonderful presentation. Former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was also given space for what the commentator described as “Mr. Naidu’s efforts in bringing international leaders and recognition.” Pat for studentsNCC Kakinada Group Commander P.V. Mohan was all praise for the energy and spirit of participation shown by the students. “It is really an enjoyable sight to behold so many children coming together. I feel happy that you are showing such sportsmanship and vigour,” said Col. Mohan, who heads 12 NCC battalions in East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts. To ignite an urge for sportsman spirit in everybody, the organisers involved sporting talents of their school to carry a blazing torch in the grounds to symbolise the beginning of the sports meet.
