Vendors on footpaths to face GHMC’s axe

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The GHMC is against vendors selling their wares on footpaths at least in the main thoroughfares of the twin cities, Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma made it clear on Thursday.

He particularly asked his staff not to encourage such activity after he noticed fruit sellers putting up temporary stalls on the recently widened S. R. Nagar and Balkampet roads during his night inspection on Wednesday.

Dr. Sarma pointed out that the Corporation was spending huge amounts on road widening and it was certainly not for allowing petty businesses or parking of private vehicles.

He directed the Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation), R. Rama Mohan Rao, to issue notices to an educational institution and a local travel agency for having parked their vehicles on main roads in S.R. Nagar.

Shelters

Moved by the plight of people sleeping in the open on the footpaths, he said that GHMC was ready to provide temporary shelters for the homeless people to sleep during nights. He told his officials to shift women and children sleeping near the Balkampet temple to be shifted to a suitable place.

As is his wont these days, the GHMC Commissioner’s visit along with his team lasted till early hours.
